Broadband Internet Access in Spain..

Expats:Living-in-spain

Like most other parts of the world, Spain is working to make broadband internet access more widespread throughout the country. The government understands that these services are critical to keeping Spain strong economically. The modern business world has no room for those who are lagging behind in broadband access, and the tourist industry also benefits from providing the high speed connections that most visitors are accustomed to having at their fingertips.

The Problem Of Rural Areas

The infrastructure required to supply broadband services is expensive to build, so companies that are in the business typically don’t venture far into rural areas because there simply aren’t enough potential customers there to warrant the expense involved. This leaves rural areas at a distinct economic disadvantage, limiting their ability to keep up with the more urban areas of the country.

There is also a definite educational impact for rural areas without broadband services. In these areas, students are much more limited in the range of classes they can take because they are dependent on local schools and teachers. This puts them at a disadvantage compared with other students and expands the chasm between “haves” and “have nots”.

Lack of broadband internet access has a negative impact on rural tourism as well. While most vacationers are seeking escape from the pressures of everyday life, a large number still want the ability to stay connected while on holiday. If the services are not available then these visitors are likely to go somewhere else where broadband services are available.

What Is Being Done

Spain is taking steps to bring broadband services to underserved areas. The government recently proposed a plan to subsidize infrastructure development to rural areas, which the European Commission approved for implementation. The EU is even helping to finance the development of broadband networks as part of their overall support for national programs that expand access into rural and underserved areas.

Improved technology is also helping to bring broadband services to isolated areas of Spain. Laying physical cables to remote areas is prohibitively expensive, so the advent of wireless technology has given a huge boost to the efforts toward connectivity. Key Spanish companies are taking advantage of the EU financial support to deploy systems that are a combination of satellite and wireless technology. The result is that rural and underserved areas are quickly gaining access to the broadband services that will keep them connected and competitive in the modern world.
