Exploring Spain – the Province Of Granada..

Spanish-Regions

In the southern part of Spain lies the province of Granada, an area that’s home to features ranging from mountains to inland plains to charming coastline. It is one of the most well-known parts of Spain and well worth a visit.

The Land

The landscape of Granada is most noted for the highest mountain peaks in Spain, known as the Sierra Nevada. These towering sentinels offer great skiing roughly from November through May, but they’re usually snowcapped for the majority of the year. During the summer and early fall the Sierra Nevada National Park beckons walkers and hikers from all over to explore its many trails and scenic routes.

Travel through the inland areas and you’ll find historic sites and unique features galore. Some of the most interesting sites are the cave dwellings in several locations, refurbished in recent years for use by tourists and visitors.

Along the coastline of Granada you’ll find beautiful beaches, uncrowded and unspoiled. Water sports abound on the coast and it’s a popular destination for scuba divers seeking clear water and abundant sea life.

The Cities And Villages

Granada is home to many traditional Spanish cities and villages, places where you can truly experience the warmth and hospitality of Spain. Start in the southern foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains where you’ll find a series of villages known as Las Alpujarras, famous as starting points for scenic hikes; move to the northern foothills and you’ll be amazed at Guadix, a town famous for being made of numerous caves dug right into the cliffs; or explore the plains area and visit Alhama, known for its plentiful hot springs.

Want to know more? The province of Granada is filled with places and activities that you will want to explore. The people are friendly and want nothing more than to welcome you to their world and share with you the heart and soul of Granada.

The History

Granada’s history goes back several thousand years and includes influences from many different civilizations. From the prehistoric residents to the Moors to the Romans, there’s no shortage of interesting archaeological and architectural features. The town of Montefrio, in the northwestern part of the province, boasts a cliff-top fortress built centuries ago by the Moors and later rebuilt as a renaissance church. Travel a little further south to the area known as Marquesado and you’ll find a 16th century fortress call the Castillo de Calahorra. This is one of the few historical monuments in Spain that remains largely untouched and unrestored, making it exceptionally exciting to visit.

Regardless of where you go in Granada, you’ll find this province to be compelling in many ways. Whatever it is that sparks your interest Granada likely has it, making the area well worth visiting.
