Singing the Praises Of the Canary Islands..Spanish-Regions
The Canary Islands are located about 1,000 kilometers south of Spain itself, and in fact are closer to Africa than to Spain. They are truly unique, with a character and landscape unlike anything else in Spain. For centuries, the islands have cast a magical spell on all who see them and today they are a thriving tourist destination.
The Canary Islands are a group of seven islands, each with a unique landscape and character. The mild climate, abundant sunshine and strategic location earned them their first name – The Fortunate Islands. Over the centuries as different civilizations claimed and conquered the islands the name changed several times, until they were finally settled and claimed by Spain.
Many are the tales of pirates and treasure among the islands, and some of them were indeed favorite hiding places for pirates. The islands themselves were likely formed by volcanic activity over several centuries, but some people like to imagine that they are actually the tops of the fabled land of Atlantis.
Visitors to the Canary Islands have a range of choices for experiencing the islands. There are seven islands in the chain and each one has its own special charm.
Tenerife – This is the largest island and a destination with many diverse landscapes. The northern coast is rocky with a great deal of lush vegetation, while the southern coast is more desert-like with sandy beaches.
Gran Canaria – This island also has diverse landscapes plus the towering volcanic peak of Pozo de las Nieves that stands like a snowcapped sentinel in the center of the island.
Lanzarote – This island is largely unspoiled and remains a place where the land is stilled farmed using centuries-old methods. It is well known for the hospitality of its people and the quiet, peaceful atmosphere.
Fuerteventura – This island has a definite North African influence in its culture and buildings. There are many small villages where the people still live in traditional ways.
La Gomera – This island is full of history, as it was the home of Christopher Columbus during final preparations for his famous voyage. His home, dating back to the 15th century, is now a museum.
La Palma – This island is virtually unaffected by the hustle and bustle of the modern world. It is known for its beauty and atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
El Hierro – This island appears sparse and arid at first glance, but it is home to many spectacular landscapes and rich, fertile lands. It was once known as Worlds End and was used as the zero meridian for ancient sailing ships.
