The Joy Of Sevilla

This city is well known for its character and sense of fun. Visitors immediately notice the wit and charm of the people and the city has a vitality that courses right through you. It is home to many festivals and celebrations, among the most famous being the Feria de Abril and the Semana Santa.

During Feria de Abril the city is awash in food, drink and dancing. Everywhere you look are proud Spanish equestrians parading about on their elegant horses and women in brightly colored dresses dancing with great joy. It is a happy time for all, with many of the activities taking place in the sea of special tents that are erected throughout the city.

During Semana Santa, or Holy Week, visitors see the traditional side of Spain and the important role religion plays in the lives of the people. The city hosts long processions of penitents wearing special hoods, followed by immense floats that hold images of the Virgin Mary or Jesus Christ. All around are crowds of people soaking up the atmosphere and participating enthusiastically.

History And Interesting Sites

Legend says the Sevilla was founded by Hercules, and the city has seen occupation by civilizations ranging from the Tartessians to the Romans to the Moors. But it really came into its own after Christopher Columbus’ famous voyage of discovery to America. In Sevilla you can visit the Archive of the Indies, home of amazing historical records related to the discovery of America and subsequent efforts toward further exploration.

Sevilla has an assortment of extraordinary cathedrals, palaces and churches just waiting to be explored. In the old section of the city are the Cathedral and Giralda tower, two of the city’s most famous landmarks. The adventurous visitor can even climb the stairs up the inside of the tower to the very top, where a spectacular view of the city awaits them as a reward for their efforts.

Also in the old city is the Alcazar, a former royal palace with exquisite gardens all around. Nearby is the Casa de Pilatos, another large mansion with beautiful gardens and scenic patios. Venturing over Triana Bridge leads you to the church of Santa Ana and an assortment of traditional factories that produce many of the famous ceramics of Spain.

Wherever you go in Sevilla you’re sure to enjoy the spirit and joy that fill this amazing city.
