Popular Excursions Starting From Madrid..Spanish-Regions
One of the best things about Madrid is that it is a perfect “jumping off” point for a multitude of excursions into the Spanish countryside. Most of these are easy day trips, allowing you to see something different every day while still returning to your home base in Madrid.
Alcala de Henares
This is a very old town that once was a bustling home to The University, founded in 1498. Visitors can walk along the old city walls dating back to the 15th century, or explore the beautiful church called Iglesia Magistral. Probably the most famous location in town, though, is Casa de Cervantes, the house once occupied by the author of Don Quixote.
El Escorial
This is a very famous monastery located about 50 kilometers from Madrid. Commissioned by King Philip II and built over a time span of 21 years, it is a huge complex that will take several hours to explore and appreciate. Of special note is the main chapel, the museum in King Philip II’s summer palace, and the majestic Pantheon where many of Spain’s deceased kings lie in their tombs.
Chinchon
If you like to eat, this is the place for you. Chinchon is a favorite spot of the people of Madrid because it is home to many extraordinary restaurants and cafes. Traditional festivities are also a big part of Chinchon, celebrations when the town is home to bullfights and theatrical productions of all kinds.
Aranjuez
This small town was made famous by the Concierto de Aranjuez by composer Joaquin Rodrigo. It is home to Palacio Real, a beautiful and amazing palace dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Touring the palace is an experience never to be forgotten, especially if you spend time in the delicate Porcelain Room or the spectacular Throne Hall.
El Valle de los Caidos
This 20th century monument was built by General Francisco Franco in 1940 as a memorial to those who died during the Spanish Civil War.
The monument has a huge cross that is 150 meters high, placed on top of a large rock that was carved out to accommodate a church. Franco himself is buried at El Valle de los Caidos, and the site is well worth the short trip from El Escorial.
Experienced travelers know that the best way to explore any destination is to take short excursions, pacing themselves and seeing a little bit each day. When you visit Spain, you would be well served to use Madrid as a starting point for your explorations.
