Exploring Spain – the Province Of Huelva..

Travel-and-Leisure

In the southwest part of Spain lies the province of Huelva, one of the most beautiful and interesting areas in this enchanting land. While not the most famous part of Spain, its wealth of activities, history, and cultural attractions make it a wonderful place to visit.

The Land

Huelva is home to some of the most stunning terrain in Spain. It boasts a national park called Coto Donana, a unique area with marshlands, sand dunes, pinewoods and freshwater lagoons. The park is teeming with wildlife of all kinds, including flamingos, mongoose, lynx and bird watchers from around the world flock (pun intended!) to Coto Donana to enjoy the huge variety of migratory birds. Shifting to the northern part of Huelva, visitors enjoy the Sierra de Aracena, an area filled with wooded hills that seem to roll on and on and on.

The Cities And Villages

All across Huelva you’ll find cities and villages filled with traditional Spanish charm. There’s the fishing port and resort area of Ayamonte, situated near Spain’s border with Portugal; an off-the-beaten-path gem called El Rompido that’s surrounded by natural preserves; and a summer hotspot called Isla Cristina, one of the most popular destinations for Spanish citizens on holiday.

This is just a sampling of the places you can visit in Huelva. Whether you’re looking for peace and quiet or stimulating night life, you’re bound to find it in one of the cities and villages of this beautiful province.

The History

The history of Huelva goes back thousands of years, but perhaps the most popular historical sites are those related to Christopher Columbus. Starting in La Rabida, you can see the area where Columbus stayed from 1491 to 1492 while Spain’s reigning monarchs decided whether or not to provide him with financial support for his planned voyage. He spent a great deal of time at a 15th century Franciscan monastery near the city, as well as making numerous visits to the nearby Convento de Santa Clara. If you travel a short distance away you’ll find Palos de la Frontera, the small town where Columbus found the men who became his crew for the voyage to America.

The Coastline

If you’re a beach lover, then the Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light) in Huelva province is the perfect destination for you. The golden sandy coastline boasts finer sand than the nearby Costa del Sol, and the beaches are generally wider and less populated than other more developed sections of Spain’s coast. The climate is mild but can be a bit breezy, thanks to the prevailing winds sweeping in from the Atlantic. This, too, has its advantages, as the wind and waves attract surfboarders and wind surfers from all over.
