The Jewels Of Murcia..Travel-and-Leisure
The province of Murcia in southeastern Spain is magical and marvelous in many respects. The crown jewels of Murcia are its beautiful cities filled with history, culture, and traditional Spanish hospitality. In addition to the city of Murcia, visitors to the province should also consider visiting Cartagena, Mula, San Javier and Lorca.
Murcia The City
The city of Murcia is located on the Spanish coast, nestled between the Sierra de Orihuela and the Cresta de Gallo mountains. It’s known for being home to an ancient irrigation system built in the 8th century, some parts of which are still in use, as well as an extensive archaeological museum that details the many different civilizations who have influenced the city throughout the centuries. One of the most popular attractions in Murcia is the Cathedral de Santa Maria, built in many phases beginning in the 14th century.
Cartegena
This major city has a long and colorful history going back to the days of Roman occupation. It is one of the major ports in Spain due to its unique location on the Mediterranean coastline, and the surrounding hilltops are home to numerous forts and castles from earlier civilizations who also appreciated the value of the sea port. Cartagena is home to a major naval base that is a key part of Spain’s military infrastructure, and the naval museum is a must-see for any visitor to the city.
Mula
This oasis of rest and relaxation is an ideal place to visit when the stresses of life become overwhelming. It’s home to the famous Banos, a series of bathing locations filled with warm, curative waters. High above the town is El Castillo, a centuries old castle that stands like a sentinel in the sky. It’s not open for tours, but you can walk up to the exterior and enjoy the tremendous view from the top.
San Javier
Sometimes referred to as the gateway to Murcia province, San Javier is one of the main jumping off points for exploring the region. It’s home to many modern amenities, including an international airport, a busy train station and large hospitals. Many visitors to San Javier appreciate that it’s located 20 to 30 minutes from a variety of attractions and activities, including cultural and architectural sites as well as shopping centers, golf courses and many fine restaurants.
Lorca
This city is a unique blend of historical significance and modern amenities. It’s an important center of tourism for the province of Murcia, boasting scenic mountains to the northwest, sandy coastline to the southeast, and some of Spain’s finest vineyards spread out in between. Lorca is home to numerous fiestas and other celebrations that are attended by visitors and locals alike, as well as historic churches, palaces, and Roman villas. It’s truly a remarkable place to visit, one that you won’t soon forget.
Jamos - www.spaingolfproperty.co.uk/ |
In 4 days - our whirlwind trip - and after visiting the key golfing destinations in the immediate vicinity of Mosa (Las Ramblas, Campomar, Villa Martin and La Manga), a quick trip into Murcia, many hours chatting to the Sales Team and being introduced to future Mosa residents, and MANY, MANY beers and Irish Whiskey's later(!) we were hooked! We had a gut feeling that Mosa would meet our criteria.
A highly sought after location."
