Jaen – Spain’s Sparkling Province..

Spanish-Regions

The province of Jaen is a sparkling example of why Spain is such an amazing place. Like many other provinces Jaen has a long history filled with influences from many different civilizations, but there are other reasons why Jaen is so special.

Getting There

Entering the province from the north is an experience few people will ever forget. There is no broad, smooth road leading into Jaen, nor is there a busy highway with typical conveniences along the way. No, when you enter Jaen from the north you find just one usable passage into the province. Called the Desfiladero de Despenaperros, this narrow mountain pass requires you to squeeze between steep, rocky mountains all around you. It’s rugged, it’s beautiful, and it’s unforgettable.

Passing Through Jaen in Spain

Once you’re through the pass, a different vista begins to unfold in front of you. Gone are the rocky slopes and in their place is an unblemished background that highlights one of the main products of Jaen. As far as the eye can see are rows of olive trees, their silvery leaves catching the sunlight and demanding to be noticed. Jaen is one of the world’s largest producers of olives and olive oil so wherever you go in the province you’ll see the benefits that come from the bounty of this product.

Seeing Is Believing

Jaen is a province filled with unique and spectacular sites. For example, in the capital city of Jaen you’ll several of Spain’s famous cathedrals dating back as far as the 16th century. On top of Mount Catalina overlooking the city is a statuesque Moorish castle, known as the Castle of Santa Catalina. The castle is not just a memorable historic building, though; it has been transformed into the Parador, a bustling hotel that sets new standards for excellence and authenticity.

Time To Celebrate

As is common throughout Spain, the province of Jaen is home to many festival, fiestas and celebrations that will enchant and entertain just about any visitor. For example, the annual Music Festival in Jaen city is a smorgasbord of music, offering everything from chamber music to flamenco to jazz and opera. It attracts music fans from all over the country and indeed from all over Europe and the rest of the world. It’s a must see event for anyone who goes to Jaen in the month of May.

The Call Of Nature

Jaen is home to the spectacular Cazorla mountain range, which in turn surrounds Cazorla National Park. This extensive wild area is home to over 90 species of nesting birds as well as large numbers of other wildlife. The best way to experience Cazorla National Park is on an excursion through the park. Whether you go on horseback, on foot, by water or by car, you’ll marvel at the sights and sounds that surround you.
