Retiring to Spain - the "pros and cons" of becoming a Retiree Property Owner Living in Spain...
It sounds like a dream, and for many it is. But just as is true with anything, there are "pros and cons" to making a move, even if you're considering retiring to Spain.
Consider some of the pros. Many parts of Spain have incredible climates. Winters in most of the country are typically mild. Those with some ailments may find some relief simply because the weather is so agreeable.
There are many retired couples in Spain so you'll likely find folks that you have lots in common with. There's plenty to do and a lifestyle that many find so wonderful that the only regret is that they didn't make the move decades earlier.
But it's not always sunshine - literally. Some areas have less agreeable weather. Don't base your decision on a single visit to an area. Try the climate out at least during the extreme seasons - winter and summer. Considering the fact that many rental properties are very affordable during off seasons, you may find that renting for a few months gives you a better idea of whether this is a good idea.
Which brings up another point - many of the areas that are heavily populated and filled with events during holiday seasons become virtually deserted during the off seasons. Stick around for that. You may find yourself bored and lonely and ready to go home - wherever that is.
Health issues can sometimes be helped by the climate, but don't overlook that you're getting older. If you're retiring to Spain, you have to face up to the fact that you're old enough to retire! You and your spouse may be in good health at the moment, but you're probably going to face some health issues over the coming years. Check into available medical facilities for areas you're considering. Think about the potential for long-term health problems in a country so far from friends and family.
Family is another important issue. Remember that you're leaving family behind and that can be very important, especially if there are small grandchildren who will only see "Gran and Gramps" at holidays. While the draw of the Spanish sun may be alluring, will it make up for what you're leaving behind? This has to be a family decision or the homesickness will likely ruin the experience.
Spain may very well be the place to retire - it is for many. But you may also find that an occasional holiday in Spain is better.
