Introduction to Cartagena

Cartagena is a three thousand year old city with a rich heritage, built on the site of an ancient settlement. Its port was quickly established as one of the foremost ports in Spain and Europe. In 223 b.C. Asdrubal, the leader of the Carthaginians, founded the settlement of Quart Hadas, the present Cartagena. However, it was the Romans who were responsible for Cartagena’a political and comMurcial development.

After a period of Byzantine domination, the city as ruled by Arabs and later by the Castilians. Nowadays Cartagena’s maritme heritage is clearly evident. The city also has plenty of archaeological treasures, like the recently discovered Roman Theatre and various interesting artefacts. The fiestas, annual markets and fairs all contribute towards the city’s unique ambience, filled with colours, light, music and tradition.

The port of Cartagena was a very important strategic hub for more than two thousands years and was praised by Admiral Nelson as one of the safest ports in the Mediterranean. The Muralla del Mar-War of the Sea-was built by the order of King Carlos 111, and surrounds the old inner city with its 8 gates. Even to this day the port of Cartagena is the naval heart of Spain and is considered on of the most beautiful natural ports in the world.
