Cities in the Murcia Region of Spain

Murcia

In the year 825, the Moors established a settlement on the spot where Murcia is now located. The square in front of the cathedral is the heart of the city, and in the evenings, the entire population of Murcia seems to occupy this space! Join in with the locals as they fill the pavement cafés, tapas bars, bodegas and restaurants.

Near the cathedral, the pedestrian street Calle de la Trapería begins. This has hundreds of shops, ranging from modern outlets selling brands to traditional top-class Spanish boutiques with articles such as hand-made shoes and bags. There are plenty of historical buildings to wander around, including the Casino, which is actually a museum.

Alicante

Nestling between mountains, Alicante is a major city on the Costa Blanca. Three thousand years ago, the first inhabitants settled on the slopes of the Benacantil mountain, occupying the castle of Santa Barbara. Then, with the arrival of the Muslims, Alicante began to connect the present city to the shelter of the castle.

Today, Alicante City is also the capital of the province of Alicante. The harbour remains significant and along it there is a long boulevard, perfect for evening walks. Alicante has plenty of beautiful beaches as well as a multitude of interesting monuments and museums.

Cartagena

The abundance of fiestas, annual markets and fairs, full of colours, light, music and tradition, all contribute towards the Cartagena unique ambience. Built on the site of an ancient settlement by the Carthaginians, it’s three thousand years old and has a rich heritage.

Its natural port was already very well known in that time – and even now Cartagena is still considered to be one of the most beautiful ports in the world. In 223 b.C. Asdrubal, the leader of the Carthaginians, founded the settlement of Quart Hadas, the present Cartagena. Later, it was the Romans who were responsible for Cartagena’s political and comMurcial development.
