Winding through historic streets, these flamboyant festivals and celebrations are richly coloured and exciting to witness. It’s all a part of the unique atmosphere of this region.
Los Reyes Magos-The Three Wise Men
The fiesta of thee Three Wise Men is a special day for children and is the first major event of the New Year. Spectacular parades run through the city centre of Murcia at around 5 o’clock in the afternoon of 5th January, and small presents are thrown from the floats to excited children. On the morning of the 6th of January children are finaly allowed to open their Christmas gifts.
La Semana Santa-The Holy Week
The Holy Week is a series of fiestas that precede Easter. The festivities start on a Friday (Viernes de Dolores) and end with Easter (Domingo de Resurreccion), covering 10 days in total. During this time the city centre is filled with colour, festivity and noise as a different procession passes through every day.
Viernes de Dolores-The Friday of Dolores
The Friday of Dolores is the first of the Semana Santa, and crowds gather in great anticipation. As the sun slowly begins to set, the first candles of the entients, who are dressed in blue tunics, are lit up in a flamboyant ceremony. They walk past the crowds in a long procession, showing off many sculptures (pasos) as they pass, including a beautiful baroque Christ, the Christ of Protection, sculpted by Francisco Salzillo.
Domingo de Ramos Palm Sunday
Today represents the entry of Jesus INTO Jerusalem and the people of Murcia decorate their balconies and doors with white palms. From the early evening hours until late at night the streets turn green. Long rows of penitents dressed in green tunics, stride through the inner-city carrying sculptures of the Christ of Hope.
Sabado de Pasion The Saturday of Christ’s Suffering
On this evening the procession represents disciples dressed up in special tunics to commemorate the Suffering of Christ with their sculptures. As night falls on Murcia this makes for atmospheric viewing, as charming sculptures are displayed in front of the Santa Ana cathedral.
Lunes Santo Holy Monday
This procession is one of the most anticipated events in Murcia and has a large number of participants. Dressed in the typical traditional attire of the villages surrounding Murcia, the men carry heavy sculptures, which include a wonderful figure of the Christ of Forgiveness.
